Estimados corredores de No:Oil,
My name is Milton, from Lisbon, and I'm a debutant marathon runner in Paris as some of you!
Finally, and as suggested by Laura, I'm writing to exchange some training experiences from these last 3 months.
All begin in January with 4 to 5 trainings per week.
During the week I did some short running (7kms which I increased to 8km in February and 9 km in March) and go to the gym to work out my legs. At Sundays I did my long run. At least 20 kms.
Sometimes I also did some series to increase velocity and decrease my heart beat rate.
When I increased the training in February, I started to feel pain in my left leg. And had to listen and interpret the messages from my body. And when necessary, I stopped for a couple of days. Without any feeling of guilt!
I was also doing an annoying blister in my right foot. I went to a doctor specialist in feet (podologist), and... I discover that my left leg is 6 millimeters higher than the right one! And that does a lot of difference for guys like us. That run a lot of kilometers! Now I run with a sole inside the running shoes to compensate the difference and I am feeling much better.
About the long running days... the biggest one I did was 30 kms. And I felt good. I believe it was important to feel that way. It turns a little bit less scary the 42 kms.
Well... resuming, my training consists on regular running during the week 7/8/10 kms. Some work out in the gym. Some supplements like magnesium (for the muscles) and glucosamine (to avoid injuries in the knees and ankles).
I believe I already told Laura, but I share an advice with all the guys from No:Oil. After one the competition I participated in Sintra, I met Rosa Mota. Portuguese Gold medal in the Olympic Marathon in Los Angeles (1984). I asked her a piece of advice for a debutant marathon runner like me. She told me: “Take it easy at the beginning. It’s better to end the marathon with the feeling that you could do better, than lose strength at KM 30”.
I wish you all the best. Hope you all have some fun in the streets of Paris and reach all your objectives!
Un saludo,
Milton
Oi Milton, Bem vindo!
Thanks for you words, and I whish you all the best for your run too!
I think that Paris is a nice place for a first marathon (and a second, a third...). It will be unforgettable for all of us, sure!
See you in Paris!! Tchau!
